About

Anastasio Wrobel is an abstract expressionist painter, award winning writer and poet. Their work often features a dynamic interplay of lines, colors, textures and incorporates different media and artistic processes to achieve a rich tapestry of color and motion.

A central theme in Wrobel's work is the exploration of gender identity, particularly through the lens of their lived experiences as transgender non-binary of Polish and Mexican descent. They use their artwork to examine the complexities of gender, self-representation, and the search for belonging all while creating visual work that captures the eye and pulls your attention in.

Wrobel calls this stage of out output "reactionary expressionism," which they have defined as: “work that is moved by the moment, often a catalogue of recorded actions input into the canvas.” They begin each artwork with words or select phrases and from their selected readings and then with each mark, they create an underpainting that moves and reacts to layering of colors and materials used in the moment. This fluidity creates depth and coded meaning in their work and the layering itself is symbolic of the complexities of identity and lived experiences.Wrobel's artistic practice extends to community work which has taken many forms over the years. They have organized art critique groups, managed art studios and hosted LGBTQ+ events and more. They currently live in Portland, OR with their partner, dog and sixty-some plants and flowers.
